What is the Difference Between Grief & Loss?

Grief and loss are obviously similar but not exactly the same. Loss refers to the act of losing something or someone significant to you. While From Heaven & Hope typically discusses the death of a loved one, loss could also be the end of a relationship, a job, or any situation where something of value to you is taken away.

However, Grief is the emotional response to loss. It is the feelings (distress, anguish, pain etc.) one experiences following loss. Namely the loss of a person. It is SUCH a big word because those feelings quite literally could be anything. If you have listened to the podcast, you’ll know that each story is different and each person grieves differently. It also doesn’t have a time frame. It can last anywhere from a day to forever and it totally depends on the person grieving and that which they have lost.

Loss (like death or loss of a job) is essentially a fact, while grief is a reaction to that fact. One can experience the fact without the reaction. However, it would be unusual to experience grief without a loss.

With that said, and as I’ve said time and time again, don’t let anyone who has perhaps experienced loss dictate to you how you should then experience grief. Because they may grieve differently OR not at all.

My goal is to: empathize, encourage and empower you as you move through grief at your own pace. I would be so honoured to be your companion and support you on this journey.
