The Best Grief Books for Kids
Explaining and sharing grief with children is so complicated. Especially if it’s an immediate family member or maybe one of their own close friends. The way kids process grief versus the way we do is different. The questions they have and subsequent answers we provide have the ability to help them and also hurt or scare them.
What do you say? Do you even know what you believe? Have you tapped into that? Have you talked about it ahead of needing to talk about it? Is the message consistent between parents, teachers and other adults in their life?
It’s just complicated and emotional. No matter how you slice it.
And, even though we do keep Brady and Levi present in our conversations with Kyla, we still have yet to delve into the specifics of what happened to them what happened to them. So, We’re really started to intentionally read stories that deal with grief, love, distance and heaven with the intention of referring back to them when we discuss Brady and Levi. Sometimes the books are very clearly about the loss of a loved one and sometimes the theme is more of a metaphor that can encompass many life events, including grief.
So, I thought I would round up a few of my recommendations in the event you are needing a reference for your kids.
I hope you don’t have to use this list any time soon. However, if you’re here because you are looking for guidance, I love these books and the comfort they provide to kids that are learning to manage their own grief.
My goal is to: empathize, encourage and empower you as you move through grief at your own pace. I would be so honoured to be your companion and support you on this journey.
